The variable input dynamic cone penetrometer (Panda 2) can supply results in many output formats such as MPa, KN, or psi. As a result of considerable interest in the UK relating to the device, a need for CBR output was identified in both ground research and compaction issues.

This has generated particular interest in bearing results for recycled materials where device can penetrate through total layers to required depth.

Standard bearing test methods can only supply effective results directly related to plate diameter. This is also the case with impact hammers as a 50mm device will only provide reliable results up to 1.5 times it's diameter (75mm in depth)

Each strike index can now provide a related resistance value in CBR percentage value. This will be particularly useful in testing compaction of any unbound or stabilised backfill material and will show results throughout depth of reinstatement.
